The seed for the band was planted back in April of '06 when I stepped on the stage at The Cove in Revere at Guy Distasio's Jam and played live for the first time since my college days with a beat up old Telecaster that I owned for years. Before that, I had only played out a few times in High School.
That first night at the Cove, I played just two standard Blues songs and I remember, I only played the rhythm parts, as when Larry Power passed the lead to me, I waved him off, as I had no idea what to do! I took about two months of lessons with Larry Power only to find out that my musical knowledge was far greater than I realized! All that I had been playing in my basement studio was transferable to the Jam. By month three, I was playing leads and singing backup to all the regular Jam songs. After about four months of attending the Cove Jam on Sunday nights, I discovered, via the internet, The Boston Blues Society listed lots more Jams I could try out for all week long. I was addicted! Some weeks, I would go to Fat Boy Bills on Wednesday nights, The Village Trestle on Sunday afternoon and the Cove on Sunday night! Every once in a while, I could find one on Mondays or Tuesdays! To improve my vocals, I took lessons from the reowned vocal coach Vykki Vox and under her guidance and Guy Distasio's suggestion I put together a band of my own to further my own growth. I selected other players of my own level so that we could grow together. Dutch on Guitar, Vinny on Drums, Mike on Bass, and Jeff on Harp were already Cove regulars, so I asked them to back me at the Lynn Ladder studio where I work. Mitch was an old friend from High School who could fill in on Bass, Guitar, and on Vocals. Doug Beville on Keyboards and Vocals is a long time friend. Roberta on Vocals and Percussion is a long time friend. Roberta has also turned out to be quite a poet! After only 4 weeks of practicing, we were asked to play a gig, which wasn't our intention, but how could we refuse! Our philosophy was we were a Jam/Garage Band. We were friends who practiced weekly to improve. But how could we refuse jobs! We have become a musical family. We want to thank Guy & Millie for the gift they have given us. Dr. "AK" KASH Kline |
